2011 Call for Papers



The deadline for submissions is March 10, 2011


Providing public recognition of the preeminent achievements and service within the National Medical Association (NMA) and within the field of medicine is an important activity of the Association. Annually, NMA confers four awards to honor luminaries within the National Medical Association and its medical societies that have demonstrated exemplary leadership or individuals of national or international stature whose efforts benefit health and medicine.

These awards are:

The Meritorious Achievement Award

The Local Society of the Year

The Distinguished Service Award

The Practitioner of the Year
Nomination Procedures:

Nominations for each of these awards are accepted from any individual member, state or local societies or the various sections of the scientific assembly. NMA's Past President's Council facilitates the selection process and recommends candidates to the Board of Trustees. Nominations for each of the awards must include a narrative description that addresses each criterion for the respective award. Submissions should be typed, double spaced (font size should be no smaller than 12 points) and a maximum of two pages.

The Distinguished Service Award

This award is given for exceptional work in medical service, medical research or academic medicine. One award will be given.

Criteria

Awardee must be a member in good standing of the National Medical Association for not less than three (3) of the most recent four (4) years.

Awardee must be a member in good standing of the National Medical Association for not less than three (3) of the most recent four (4) years.

Awardee must have shown in his/her professional and personal life that he/she supports the objectives of the National Medical Association.

Awardee must have done exceptional work in one (1) or more of the three (3) areas wherein the medical profession expresses its concern for mankind; namely, service, research, and teaching. He/she must be acclaimed at the international, national or local level, provided the acclaim extends into the state beyond the boundaries of his/her community.

The basis for the selection may be, but shall not be limited to, exceptional merit in rendering services to the National Medical Association.

If a candidate fails to satisfy any of the criteria included in this section under the headings listed above, his/her qualifications will be considered carefully by the Past President's Council. The Past President's Council will make the final determination and if the candidacy is approved, the Council will submit the candidate's name along with a special justification on his or her behalf.

The Meritorious Achievement Award

This award is given for noted national and international achievement and prominence.

One award will be given.

Criteria

Awardee must have made significant contributions that are recognized at the national and international level.

Awardee must be recognized by the international medical community as a scholar in medical science.

Awardee need not be a member of the National Medical Association. This enables the Association to reach beyond its membership to honor qualified candidates.


The Local Society of the Year


This award is given to local societies that demonstrate exemplary leadership in membership recruitment, community service and continuing medical education. Two awards are given: one for a large society (at least 100 members) and one for a small society (less than 100 members).

Criteria


Local societies must demonstrate recruitment and growth in membership during the year.


Local societies must provide evidence of health education programs in the community during the respective year.

Local societies must provide evidence of continuing medical education programs for the benefit of its members.

The Practitioner of the Year


This award signifies peer recognition for demonstrated service and characteristics that exemplify the highest standards of professionalism and sense of community. One award will be given.



Criteria


Awardee must be a member in good standing of the National Medical Association for not less than three (3) of the four (4) most recent years.


Awardee must have shown in his/her professional and personal life that he/she supports the objectives of the National Medical Association.


Awardee must be highly regarded in his/her community as a physician and as a person, so certified by responsible citizens of the community.



Awardee must have shown the quality of compassion without which the practice of medicine could not have generated into a trade.


Awardee must have become involved in problems of the community, and worked for the betterment thereof, apart from those efforts which relate solely to the practice of medicine.


Deadline for Submissions is March 10, 2011

Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the NMA Board of Trustees and your national office staff, we wish you and yours all the pleasures of the holidays-filled with warmth and blessed by peace.

I hope each of you will take time during this season to remember the reason, reflect on this wondrous year and the great year 2011 promises to become. This year was filled with milestones, including the passage and signing into law, the Affordable Health Care Act, Health Information Technology adoption,which is a key priority for the NMA given its potential to improve care coordination, reduce errors, health outcomes, and the recent "doctor fix" in Medicare payments.

I encourage you to spend your holidays enjoying he company of family and friends reverencing the past, appreciating the present and planning for an exciting new year. In addition we should heed the words of Dr. Lee Beers "as professionals who advocate for healthy individuals and families. We must model healthy behaviors in our own lives through care and attention to ourselves and our families/ friends balanced against the care and attention we give to our patients."

Concert

Adele D. Allen, M.D., has been a pianist since the age of five. She is the Founder, Director, Accompanist for the Crucian Community Choir which she organized on October 31, 1989 in her home in St. Croix. She served as Organist for Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for five years in the 1990s. In St. Croix, she has been a member of Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church where she served on the Church Council from 2002-2004. As an educator at John H. Woodson J.H.S. for seven years, she directed the middle school chorus and worked as a music educator. In addition, she frequently accompanied the Central High School Choir when they performed in the Territory and when they competed and won national prizes for choral competitions in Atlanta, Ga. in the late 1990s. Dr. Allen also served as Adjunct Professor of Nursing at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix campus for three years in the 1990s.




Dr. Allen was elected by the people of St. Croix and served for four years as a member of the V.I. Board of Elections. She served as Vice-President of the STX Board of Elections and Secretary of the Territorial Board of Elections during her tenure. In addition, she was elected President of the St. Croix American Cancer Society, the St. Croix Unit of the League of Women Voters and Vice-President of United Way of St. Croix. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Island Center for the Performing Arts during the construction of the Sidney Lee Performing Arts Center. She has been a judge for the Hal Jackson Talented Teen Competition, and an accompanist for the VITELCO Arts Alive Music Competition in St. Thomas for students from the St. Croix schools. Dr. Allen was a member of the Rotary Club of St. Croix from 1990 until 2004.



A graduate of Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts (B.A.), the Institute of Human Nutrition of Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City (M.S.) and the American University of the Caribbean in Plymouth, Montserrat (M.D.), Dr. Allen studied music with Mr. Ira Pendler, Dr. David LeVita and Miss Phyllis Moss throughout her formative years. She is a former winner of the Omega Psi Phi Talent Competition during her high school years, and the National Association of Negro Musicians' (Mu Te Or chapter, Brooklyn, NY) talent competition.

Recently she accompanied the Imani Singers of Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York during the retirement commencement ceremonies for Dr. Edison T. Jackson, former President of CUNY-Medgar Evers.



Her most recent recital was presented at Tillett Gardens for the Arts Alive Concert Series on November 10, 2010 with Mr. Steve Wallace, tenor from NYC. Dr. Allen has been selected as the organist for the Inaugural Mass for Governor John DeJongh on January 3, 2011 at Sts. Peter & Paul Cathedral in Charlotte Amalie. Her DVD and CD releases are "Out of the Black Experience" from 2009 and "LIVE from St. Thomas: A Musical Tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.-2010".
